Saxifraga 'Silver Velvet'

This little bunch of flowers was almost thrown out with the yard waste this afternoon. I'm so glad I rescued it as it is one of the last plant to flower in the garden and being such a small thing it is easily overlooked and shaded over by its larger neighbours.  It is one of the Fall blooming Saxifragas sometimes called S. fortunei 'Silver Velvet' and sometimes S. cortusifolia 'Silver Velvet'. I suspect it is a hybrid of these two. Its foliage is a delight all summer, but it's late season foliage is always a surprise, it is after all November in MontrĂ©al, but no one has yet told this recent transplant from balmy southern Ontario.

Stripped of its foliage which tends to be the magnet for the unsuspecting eye, these delightful flowers are in their own quite beautiful. It is one of my favourite Saxi's Barry! Glad he came with you to Montreal! Hope all is well with you!

Thanks Barry, glad to hear that you share my enthusiasm for 'Silver Velvet'
I'm well and enjoying MTL. Get in touch if you are in this part of the world.

I think the word is 'charming' or perhaps 'delightful'. Or both. Now I have plant envy....again.

Laura, Fortunately 'Silver Velvet' is the most easily available of the Sax. fortunei in eastern Canada. Knowing that you have some nice specimens, perhaps we could organize swap of divisions next Spring?
