Jelena

-
This Hamamelis x intermedia "Jelena' Has been growing in my garden for at least 20 years, and is close to 14' in height and now towers above the nearby fence which is 7'.
It has been beautiful at all stages of its growth, but never more than now, when in the coldest month of the year, it glows in the afternoon sun.
This moment in time has been hard to capture, but I hope this picture comes close to showing this effectively.

Nice shot with the backlighting, Barry. It was a tough decision for me between Jelena and Arnold Promise about 10 years ago (I chose the latter) but any variety of hybrid witchhhazel is superb. The genus really offers almost all year interest but I don't see these often in other gardens, sigh.

Hi Paul,

'Arnold Promise' is a good choice, in fact it would have been a good one for me as 'Jelena' is almost the same colour as the leaves on the Beeches in Winter. 'Arnold' would have given a much more satisfying contrast in colour.

What is it with Canadian gardeners? You'd think that everyone would like to have this wonderful show in the middle of Winter.

I've lusted after 'Jelena' for many years. Perhaps this will be the year I do something about it. Someone not far from me has what I think is 'Arnold Promise' in their front yard. The first time I drove by it, I immediately circled the block for a closer look. These are spectacular spring bloomers.

Hi Helen,

Well actually they are winter bloomers. They are regularly in flower this time of year and even earlier if they get a mild day.

Sidewalks of San Francisco

For a person visiting San Francisco from "The Great White North", one is struck not only the weather but also by the plant life that flourishes in this ideal mediterranean climate. I've just returned from a week in this lovely city, and again I was impressed by the quality, variety and creativity of gardening that I found there. In this post I am paying particular attention to the gardens I found in the front gardens which often  overflowed onto the sidewalks and boulevards. Many of the plants that I saw there are the same that I grow outdoors and have to move indoors from November to April. And since the San Francisco plants are grown in the ground they are huge compared to my container grown collection.

Plants at My Front Door

Last year I had a rather autocratic message from the UK suggesting that my love of limey, gold and chartreuse plants could lead me down the path to "brassy" tastelessness. I bristled at this, but tried to ascertain whether this was a fair comment. My critic, perhaps had not taken into account that I live in a completely different environment from her, and that the quality of light and extremes of climate affect our reaction to colour in a different way. In our hot, humid summers and brilliant sunshine, I find that these yellow/greens are actually cooling and rather than being strident, are very subdued and complimentary to other colours in the garden. Well, judge for yourself. I'm showing here an arrangement of plants at my front door, which I find very pleasing, A cooling vignette in the last few days of a very hot summer. Plants at my front door. Durantia, Angelonia 'Purple Stripe' and purple Callibrachoa. Coleus 'Fishnet Stockings...

Rescue Plants

It is so satisfying to liberate plants from the imprisonment of an uncaring Big Box store. This I did last Fall when I found three Agave desmettiana, a mature plant with two large offsets crammed into a two gallon pot. I managed to winter them over under lights in my basement and was further satisfied last week when on a mild day I was able to take them out onto the balcony where, with a little surgery, I was able to separate them and give them their own root space in new pots. I can't wait for the warmer weather when I can get them out of doors.  Agave desmettiana 'Variegata' and two offspring, crammed into a 2 gallon pot. Divided and repotted.
